The per liter wine tax, of which 88 percent is distributed to local governments, is collected from the department’s sale of wine. The remaining 12 percent of the wine tax is used by the department for operating revenue.
Mr. Shobe emphasized that, in addition to the board’s efforts to modernize and streamline its operations, the department has also stepped up its campaign to curb alcohol abuse and underage drinking. The department’s speakers bureau “addresses thousands of high school and middle school students on the consequences of alcohol abuse and underage drinking,” he said. It has also spbnsored a state-wide forum for college and universities for the past twoyears.
