As the number of building permits rose, so did the value of new homes. According to zoning office statistics, the worth of a new residence built in Rappahannock last year averaged $105,862, a 31 percent increase from the $80,787 average of 1986 and a 66 percent increase from the $63,531 average of 1985.

Commercial development was almost non-existent in Rappahannock County last year. The zoning administrator’s report shows two special use permits granted for bed-andbreakfast operations totalling seven rooms and a rezoning in Amissville from rural residential to agricultural for the seasonal sale of azalea bushes and other nursery products grown in-county. But building permits for, these uses have yet to be issued, he told the commissioners.
