A Midsummer Night's Dream is not the only production Cornerstone will bring to Rappahannock. The touring group will also present / Can't Pay the Rent on Friday, Feb. 12, at the elementary school in two performances for younger theatergoers. The show was developed by Cornerstone to expose an audience to a variety of theater genres. The same story is presented 15 times by three actors, transformed each time by changes in sets, props, lighting, and other tools of the theater trade. 1 Can’t Pay the Rent is aimed at kids, but adults also enjoy it, Mr. Rauch noted. “We get 45 minutes to tell kids everything we want to tell them about theater - and make it fun.”
Cornerstone’s members plan eventually to give up the vagabond life and settle down as a resident company, so the brief stints with Arts on the Road are valuable because of the opportunity to work together and hone their acting talents. In their usual extended residencies, they work with local people who often lack theater experience.
During this Virginia tour sponsored by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, Cornerstone’s, players will rehearse and perform only with theater professionals - themselves. “That’s incredibly important, and it’s exciting for us,” concluded Mr. Rauch.
