“Pinch me! Pinch me!” Supervisor Nelson Lane joked.
But he wasn’t dreaming at the board’s April 11 work session on the proposed school budget: the School Board was offering use of kitchen facilities at the public schools for the jail’s food services, giving the supervisors a way out of a difficult situation.
“We have a cafeteria. We have two cafetrias that are only used a few hours during the school day,” said Dr. David Gangel, adding that an employee of the sheriffs department could work around the lunch program to prepare meals for prisoners. And in addition to providing its own supplies and kitchen staff, the Sheriffs Department would be expected only to pay something towards maintenance and repairs to offset the increased use of the facilities, the superintendent said.
