She decided to try and wait Leaf out - attempt to gain his confidence in the hope that later he would make a mistake that would allow her to escape with Charlie. “I thought that first week that he was testing me.” She said that she was afraid that he had rigged the gun with an empty clip, or had the safety on, which she didn’t know how to operate. Then, “he could get the gun back and use it on me.”
And always, in the back of her mind, was the thought that ‘VI got away he would come back to Connecticut. It wouldn’t be over until he got me. I knew that my family couldn’t handle that.”
The plan goes awry
It was in Old Hollow that Leafs plan began to unravel. Ms. Hart said that he wanted to ditch the Nova, steal another car and keeR going.
On Saturday, April 2, Ruby Dwyer had asked Leaf to move the car, which was parked on her property. Leaf agreed, telling Mrs. Dwyer that his son had wanted to play in the stream.
That night, they abandoned the car and slept in what Ms. Hart described as an old house used as a shed. On Sunday, they got food and * cigarettes from the car.
Later, Ms. Hart said, Leaf planned to return to Mrs. Dwyer’s house, tie her up and steal her money and car. Ms. Hart was able to talk him out of the plan by producing some money she had hidden in her wallet. With that Leaf bought groceries at Old Hollow Grocery. Then he took the identification numbers off the car and they walked into the woods.
After the Nova was discovered, Leaf made several attempts to steal another car, Ms. Hart said, but was always scared away when dogs started barking. “Luckily, everyone around there has dogs - they should give them an extra bone.”
