Spending tVo days per week in Rappahannock, this person would “take care of the complex maintenance problems” that are beyond the scope of the custodial staff, Dr. Gangel explained. He also noted that a 16-percent increase in custodial supplies parallels the 16-percent increase in floor space in the high school expansion.
To the budget’s inclusion of an additional teaching position, planned as a combination art and gifted and talented resource teacher at the elementary school, the supervisors noted that with the expected enrollment increase, Rappahannock’s pupil-teacher ratio wilf remain essentially unchanged.
Supervisor Estes asked for the reasoning behind the propesal for 8percent increases for classified employees. “I don’t know what the rest of you hear,” Mr. Estes said, adding that the majority in his district sup> port pay raises for instructional staff but question why bus drivers should get 8-percent when other state employees and workers in private industry are getting only 1- to 4percent salary hikes.
“We’re trying to play catch-up and keep the people we have,” Mrs. Massie said.
