A Day Not Wasted
m
Brooks Adams, son of one-time ambassador to Great Britain Charles Francis Adar wrote in his diary when just a boy: "Went Fishing with my father—u.e most glorious day of my life.” So great was the influence of that one day’s personal relationship with his father that for thirty years afterward he made repeated references in his diary to his memory of that occasion.
The other side of the stoiy is sad. The father had also written in his diary about that same day: “Went fishing with my son A day wasted.” ,
Let’s give the ambassador benefit of the doubt: perhaps they caught no fish and that accounted for his evaluation, "A day wasted.” Yet. the purpose of going fishing with one’s son is not to catch fish!
