She said that several news reports she had heard that Leaf was sighted outside Old Hollow also sounded false. One was attributed to a resident who said he saw Leaf walking up the Thornton River near what the reporter called a “junkyard.”
“I don’t remember seeing any junkyard,” Ms. Hart said.
She added that Leaf had been away from her and young Charlie on only two occasions, and both were at night.
Once was Tuesday night, April 5, when all three walked through the field behind Old Hollow Grocery. Then Leaf tied her up and left Charlie sleeping beside her. He went nowhere but inside the store, she said.
The second occasion was Thursday night, April 7, when he again tied her, this time inside a bam while he walked a short distance to recover provisions he had hidden. That time he was nearly discovered by sheriffs deputies.
Ms. Hart didn’t think he had time to walk to whc~e he was allegedly sighted, at least a mile from tne jiiace where Leaf had left them.
Although she admitted she is unfamiliar with the area, Ms. Hart said that she felt sure that the three had never ventured from Old Hollow, the area where the search was concentrated.
