Then, Ms. Hart said, they waited again while agents located the tent and brought out Charlie’s toys and other items which Leaf had made them leave behind. He had planned to return to get them, Ms. Hart said, but was unable to because of the search.
Later, Ms. Hart said, the negotiator told her that the police called the tent “Disneyland East,” because of the toys and the Easter basket they found.
The negotiator kept talking, she recalled, telling them exactly what would happen. The FBI wanted two pilots, but Leaf insisted on only one. The agent said the team inside the house would leave by the bade door, and Leaf could come out in his own time. Leaf 8 last walk
With the ties from a bathrobe, Leaf tied his son onto his back. Ms. Hart was in front of him, the carbine to her head and a hunting knife to her throat when they left the bedroom upstairs, she said.
“We started walking, slowly, downstairs and onto the front porch. Then we went down the driveway, and had to hop a fence into the field. As we went toward the helicopter, he saw marksmen hidden in the woods, and he pointed them out.”
Then, she said, came “the minute which seemed to last forever.” When the helicopter lifted off before they reached it, Ms. Hart remembers Leaf saying, “Kitten, this is it”
“I was praying,” she said, “I said, ‘God, I can deal with it.’ I was waiting for the bullet, and it didn’t come.”
The wind from the helicopter’s rotor knocked her off balance, and she squatted down. “I heard a thump, and looked around and saw Charles and Charlie lying on the ground. The baby looked unconscious.
“They (FBI agents) told me to run, and then they tackled, searched and handcuffed me. They explained why as they did it — it was for their protection — they didn’t know if I had a weapon or if I was helping him.”
Other agents took Charlie to the end of the field, where Ms. Hart’s handcuffs were removed and they were reunited. Then they were whisked to the command post at the Sperryville Fire Hall, and finally to Culpeper Memorial Hospital for a medical examination.
There, a doctor diagnosed two fractures in Ms. Hart’s noee. On Monday, she ^aid, she was to see a dentist in Connecticut for a possible fractured jaw.
‘It had to end this way’
