The Virginia Rider Training Program is offering Virginia’s motorcyclists the opportunity to improve their riding skills and learn to avoid accidents through motorcycle rider training courses conducted around the state, a spokesman for the Department of Motor vehicles said.
The program, established by DMV, is an effort to reduce the disproportionate number of motorcycle injuries and fatalities occurring on Virginia’s roadways.
“Lack of rider skill and training is a key factor in many accidents involving motorcycles,” said DMV Commissioner Donald E. Williams.
Motorcyle fatalities have decreased by 35 percent since the program was implemented in July 1985. There were 62 motorcycle fatalities in Virginia last year, compared with 96 in 1985.
