thick silk shelter is expanded as they grow larger and wander further to find leaves. Each caterpillar trails a silk thread as it moves. Heavily infested trees become leafless silkbound skeletons until the insects depart and replacement leaves develop.
Some time in May, four to six weeks after hatching, full grown caterpillars start searching for places to spin the yellowish-white cocoons in which they transform into brown pupae. Cocoons are spun in any protected place on infested trees, nearby vegetation, debris or buildings.
