he was two minutes behind Mr. Reynolds’ 37:55. Though Panther standout Marley Hay was unable to break Mr. Reynolds’ Smith Memorial streak, Matthew may be the next contender for the crown.
He was followed across the line by Sam Dwyer for the third place Smith Memorial trophy, in a time of 42:48.
Christine Sims, who finished second in the divison last year, took home the third place Smith trophy this year with a time of 47:20.
A special award was presented to Diane Bruce, who marked her 10th year as one of the race’s principal organizers. She and former County Clerk Eva L. Smith were two of the event’s early backers. For many years, they and a loyal cadre of volunteers shouldered the burden of the race’s promotion, earmarking the proceeds for the Rappahannock Recreation Authority, which administers the Rappahannock County Park.
This year, the race gained a cosponsor in the Child Care and Learning Center, but Ms. Bruce continued her labors as the event’s de facto director, indoctrinating a new crew of volunteers, as well as renewing the dedication of the old hands.
One of the new volunteers, Washington’s Mayor Dean Morehouse, had high praise for Ms. Bruce’s efforts both this year and over the past decade. “I want the world to know that this event could not have happened without her. Diane, you’re one terrific lady!” Ms. Bruce was presented with a plaque
