Without leaves to make food, defoliated trees have to draw on reserve energy to produce new foliage in June. This can leave them weak and susceptible to additional stress factors, but healthy trees recover quickly. When prize trees get defoliated, it usually helps to fertilize them late that fall.
Protection of a few trees is simple, especially if they are small. To begin with, you have most of the year to find and destroy egg masses. In case you miss some, start looking for silk to appear on branches about the time that leaf buds open.
As soon as nests appear, wait until they are occupied - in early morning or during cold, wet weather — and remove the caterpillars.
