The Department of Forestry notes that April is time for nests of the familiar and unwelcome eastern tent caterpillar to appear in apple, crabapple, and cherry trees. This is not to be confused with the gypsy moth, which does not build tents that look like cobwebs.
Egg masses like small, oblong pieces of dark brown styrofoam stay wrapped around twigs from late summer through winter. They hatch from mid to late March, about the time of bud break, and tiny caterpillars pour out to build a* nest and search for food.
