Hiding, watching
Leaf built a crude tent from plastic he had found “off another road from where the car was found,” Ms. Hart said. She told of being able to see “two farms, green hills and cows.” In the late afternoon, she said, one of the farmers would go outside and call his cows, “and the cows would respond with a chorus of ‘Moos.’ It went on for a half-hour.”
Young Charlie, she said, was kept happy and quiet playing with the toys Leaf had allowed her to bring along for him. In the bag, she had also brought his Easter basket, so when he awoke Sunday morning, “the Easter Bunny had visited.”
Tuesday night, Leaf took them with him when he walked to Rt. 211 to burglarize Old Hollow Grocery. They waited in the field behind the store until Charlie fell asleep, then Leaf tied her so she couldn’t escape.
After several attempts, Leaf finally got into the store and stole food and cigarettes. He hid half the booty under leaves by the stream across Rt. 612, then they took the rest back to the tent.
Ms. Hart said they spent Wednesday and Thursday hiding in the tent, watching the massive search mounted for them. She said they could see and hear the helicopters, but were never spotted. The final move
On Thursday night, Leaf decided to go back and pick up the rest of the provisions he had hidden. He left Ms. Hart and Charlie in the loft of a bam on the property where they were eventually discovered. Again, she was tied so she couldn’t get away.
Leaf was by himself, and when he returned he told of seeing lights. They were apparently the lights of the sheriffs deputies searching for him after two residents had reported
