During a telephone interview on Monday, Ms. Hart was asked about several news reports which appeared after the kidnapping which alleged that Charles Leaf had lived at one time, perhaps five years ago, in a “commune” in Rappahannock County.
She confirmed the information given to the Rappahannock News last week by Sheriff John Henry Woodward and two FBI agents who were interviewed separately: that as far as she knew Leaf had never been to Rappahannock County and didn’t know anyone here.
“I was with him five years ago,” she pointed out. “We never lived anywhere in Virginia. The only time we could have ever been in Virginia was one time when we travelled from Atlantic City to Virginia Beach” and back home to Connecticut.
The route she described was along the shore highways to the beach, and back up Interstate 95 to New England. “I had never been to Rappahannock County before this time,” Ms. Hart added.
She said that Leaf livecl for a short time in Vermont, but as far as she knew he had never lived in Virginia.
“I don’t think he knew where he was going,” Ms. Hart said. At one time, Leaf talked of going to Tennessee, she recalled. “That’s why he went this way, I guess.”
