Finally, Leaf was arrested just before Christmas when he and the boy went to a Christmas party at his construction site. In the melee which ensued when police attempted to arrest Leaf, one of the workers snatched the boy and fled. Two days later, the boy was dropped off at the Shelton, Conn, police station.
Although police were told that the boy was found wandering on a street, Ms. Hart said, “we know that the person who brought him to the police station was a friend of Charlie’s.”
Tired of running
Because of the threats Leaf had made against her and her family, Ms. Hart spent some time last year in hiding, living with friends. She was unsure that Leaf would not kidnap her again and probably, this time, kill her. “I lived in fear,” she said. “Switching jobs, picking up and starting over - I’ve done that a lot in the past two years.”
She called her decision to end the relationship with Leaf “the hardest in my life.” But, she feels that she did the right thing, and always had “hope that he would move on with his life.”
After Leaf was arrested and her son was returned to her, Ms. Hart moved into her parents’ home in Trumbull, Conn.
She said she “kept going to court to tell them how dangerous he is.” Despite her testimony, she watched as his bond on kidnapping, possession of a weapon without a permit and other charges from the December melee was reduced from $130,000 to $75,000 and he was released from custody on bail.
