Another Rappahannock volunteer, Gladys Havstad, specializes in one kind of service. She provides transportation from the county’s isolated hollows to nearby larger towns for errands, doctors’ visits, and hospital tests. “I’ve never been reluctant to go to strange homes or meet new people,” she said. “Many of the people I drive are under stress and I try to be a support while respecting their privacy.”
Gladys started providing transportation several years ago when she “felt like I wasn’t doing anything for anyone but myself.” She pointed out that volunteering doesn’t obligate the volunteer to accept a certain assignment: ‘Wlien necessary, I
