DMV estimates 1,300 riders will be trained this year. Last year, 1,086 riders were trained.
The Virginia Rider Training Program was established by the 1984 General Assembly and is funded by a $3 surcharge placed on motorcycle registration fees. Training centers are administered by DMV and usually are coordinated with the state community college system. The centers receive funding through the program to help keep tuition costs low.
For beginning riders, the Motorcycle Rider Course offers riding and street strategies, basic street skills and practice on protected off-street driving ranges. Motorcycles and equipment are provided through participating dealers. The cost for the course is usually $25 to $50.
Experienced riders may enroll in the Experienced Rider Course. The eight-hour course emphasizes countersteering, advanced riding techniques and street strategies. Tuition is about $15 to $35 at DMV-approved centers.
