The Rappahannock County Garden Club joined their sister garden clubs of the Shenandoah District for the annual fall meeting at Orkney Springs on Oct. 16. As we wandered the byways through the green hills southwest of Woodstock toward the resort, we wondered how it must have been approaching the Springs in the days of 1879 to 1880 when Orkney was in its heyday.
From the 1850s the populace of the lowlands of Virginia and other Southern states traveled from the heat and malaria-ridden low country to the cool retreats of the Virginia Springs during July and August.
Patrons went to their favorite spa or made the grand circuit, visiting a number of these highland resorts during the season. The trek, complete with matrons, children of ‘all ages, maids, nurses, bandboxes and trunks, might be traveled in the luxury of one’s own carriage or by common stagecoach. The menfolk might ride their favorite mounts beside the vehicle and it can surely be said that all were impatient to reach their destination after the discomfort of bumpy and dusty roads.
Some vacationers approaching from the south might use the James River Canal from Richmond as the first leg of the lengthy journey.
