These people, the poor and the homeless, give rise to a serious question: can a society be healthy if it ignores such a substantial number of its members? I suggest that we push this problem aside at our peril — that, if we do, it will grow and grow until it can be managed, if at all, only by extreme measures.
I believe that on this point, the Democratic Party will address the issue in a rational way, and not by invoking a “rising tide” theory as the other party would have us do. Despite the rising tide of the past six years, for example, more than 37 million boats are still resting on the mud flats.
Second, the Democratic Party is, both historically and today, the party that believes in education — at all levels, from nursery school to professional schools. Good education costs money. It involves such matters as incentives for teachers, competent laboratories and teaching equipment, scholarship aid and loans for students and modem facilities.
