The result of such expenditures will be more than rapid when welltrained, well-educated young people take their place in society and in the work force. The money we spend now for improved education is in a very real sense an investment in the future of America. It is an investment that the Democratic Party has always been and is now willing to make.

Third, the Democratic Party is, in my opinion (gasp!) better at fiscal management and better for business than the other party. I concede that the other party’s policies are better for business in the short term.

But consider the long term! For eight years we have borrowed and borrowed, and spent and spent, until we have mortgaged our future with debt — more debt in these past eight years than in the entire 200-year antecedent history of the Republic. And we have forfeited our place as the leading economy in the world to Japan and perhaps West Germany.

The other party’s focus on shortterm returns may have paid off in national election results, but at what cost to the country!
