To the editor:
I am surprised and annoyed, as a Rappahannock News subscriber 12 or more years, to see your newspaper giving space in the “Letters to the editor” column of Oct. 20 to a “canned” attack on Gov. Michael Dukakis presented under the signature of Grace N. Blair.
Actually this material was lifted almost word for word from Republican Party campaign boilerplate, echoing the gross distortions and outright falsehoods that the Republican Party packagers, handlers and “spin docs” have used so skillfully in this campaign.
Out of fairness I hope the Rappahannock News will give its readers a better chance to judge for themselves within your newspaper columns the record of Michael Dukakis as governor, by giving space to the following points which I freely acknowledge are taken from material of the Dukakis for President campaign in which I am a full-time volunteer.
Thirteen years ago, when Dukakis first became Governor, Massachusetts was an economic and financial basketcase. Unemployment was second highest in the nation. Jobs were disappearing at a record rate. Massachusetts had the highest state deficit proportionately in the country.
