However, earlier this year Avtex was threatened by as much as $16 million in fines for safety, health and environmental violations related to the plant.
The Occupational Health and Safety Administration alleged that the plant had repeatedly violated federal requirements for worker protection. In the past year, safety officials alleged that nearly 2,000 violations of health and safety laws had occured at the plant.
In August, the Virginia Attorney General’s office leveled allegations that Avtex had unlawfully dischaged pollutants into the Shenandoah River 1,590 times since 1980. According to the complaint, the discharges had contributed to the decline of water quality in the river, as well as the contamination of wells near the plant’s discharge point.
