we’ve been able to run the gallery for most of our three years with volunteers,” noted Ms. Marshall.
For just six months, Alisa Overton was the gallery’s paid director, “and we saw how great it was to have a director,” Ms. Marshall said. “As a rule, artists don’t think in terms of committees. A director can help us use our time more efficiently. And the time we’re spending on gallery management can be spent on art.”
She added that a director will dp a better job of publicizing Middle Street and letting both artists and the public know that the Piedmont region does have one gallery dedicated solely to fine arts. “And having a director will make it possible for us to expand our educational programs and be of more service to the community.”
The money-raising effort, which will begin with a cocktail party on Dec. 2 to preview the Christmas show and continue with a solicitation of art patrons and foundations, is aimed at covering the next nine months. In August, Marshall noted, the Middle Street Gallery Artists’ Cooperative, as a new and emerging arts organization, will become eligible for a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and that should practically fund the director’s position.
