First, the Democratic Party is, both historically and today, the party of compassion. In the past eight years, we have seen a widening gap between the very rich and the very poor. Today, more than 37 million Americans live at or below the poverty line, including some in Rappahannock County.
About a quarter of the children born in this country are bom in poverty and face lives of diminished expectations. Many of these people have turned, in their despair, to drugs and to the crime and violence that drugs engender.
In addition, there are the homeless on the streets of all our cities, cast out of hospitals because they were not considered to be in need of institutional care, but are nevertheless unable to cope with the problems of living.
