The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in America. It is small (200,000), but it has been around since 1972, and has fielded five presidential candidates. Third parties seem to start up when the big ones won’t deal with big problems.
The Republicans were a third party (their candidate was Abraham Lincoln) arising because on one would deal with slavery; the issue was resolved by the Civil War.
The Socialist Party arose in the late 19th century, since the harsher aspects of the Industrial Revolution were not being dealt with. It was always small. It never came to power. But the party’s perennial 20th Century candidate, Norman Thomas, quit
