Sixth, there are other issues in which the Democratic Party, in my view, has the better of it. In the matter of protecting the environment, for example, consider Secretary of the Interior James Watts and EPA Administrator Anne Gorsuch, who tried, respectively, to “develop” the National Parks and to soften the requirements of toxic waste disposal. Acid rain affects us right here in Virginia, yet the other party has considered only the cost of treating it, not the benefits to be derived from mitigating the problem.
In the matter of comprehensive health programs and child care, the Democratic Party has recognized that the long-term benefits more than justify the short-term costs.
In short, the Democratic Party accepts and welcomes change, and will respond rationally to new circumstances. The other party is the party of the status quo and fears change. America’s future will, in the long term, be brighter under Democratic leadership. I urge you to vote the straight Democratic ticket on Nov. 8.
