To the editor:
John Marocchi’s OP-ED article of Oct. 20 is an elevated and idealistic apologia for the Republican Party. The calmness, balance and courtesy of the prose make for nice political reading today. Robert Eastham’s “Letter to the editor” of Oct. 27 expresses my own reaction to Mr. Marocchi’s article—as an article. Mr. Eastham also puts forth what amounts to a challenge that a writer comparable in caliber to John Marocchi be found to state the “key principles” of the Democratic Party.
It is far from any intent of mine to try and become such a spokesman for the Democrats. I only suggest in passing that there seems to be a considerable discrepancy between the tone of those “key Republican principles” and the tone of the current Republican campaign as sounded by George Rush and Dan Quayle.
Were fortune to provide a Democratic spokesman comparable to John Maroechi in intelligence, ability and sincerity, and were such a spokesman to come up with a piece expressing the key principles of the Democratic Party on a level with Mr. Marocchi’s article, such a piece would be as unrelated to today’s political climate as that of John Marocchi.
