Sports physicals offered
Although the 1989 school year is barely over, administrators are already preparing for next year. RCHS Athletic Director Mike Lacika announced that physicals for students planning to try out for sports will be offered this month. The free physicals will be given, for boys, on Friday, June 23 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.; and girls, Monday, June 26 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Mr. Lacika reminds all prospective athletes that anyone, including cheerleaders, who plans to try out for fall sports must have a completed physical before they will be allowed to practice.
Hunter education course
The Virginia Game Commission will sponsor a Hunter Education Course on Thursday and Friday, July 13 and 14. The location will be announced later. The course is required of all first-time hunters and'all hunters less than 16 years old. For more information, or to pre-register, call Game Warden Jim Bankston (937-5192).
Skywatchers needed
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has a weather observation system which gives earlier warnings of severe weather than has ever been possible before. However, NOAA's network is not sufficiently sensitive to catch small, isolated pockets of severe weather which develop very quickly. NOAA's "Skywarn" spotter program is designed to fill this gap with volunteers who report potentially or immediately dangerous weather conditions directly to NOAA. . Depending on their location, participants' may be issued instruments to measure wind speed, rainfall or river depth. Their readings are reported directly to NOAA. Any Rappahannock County residents who are interested in participating in the program should contact Col. D.C. Knuepfer, the county's emergency services coordinator (675-3483) for further information.
Jaycees chapter wanted
The Jaycees are seeking interested county residents to start a Rappahannock Chapter. Any man or woman between 2139 years of age is eligible to join. Founded in 1920, the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce (which became the U.S. Jaycees in 1965), now has more than 10,000 members in 150 chapters across Virginia. The Jaycees, according to Charlie Robinson, the state vice-president, are a volunteer community service organization. Its focus' is on whatever projects the local chapter's members feel are important to their community. Any residents interested in assisting with the formation of a local chapter should contact Mr. Robinson at (703) 667-8259 for more information.
