Bees are very much respected in England. Back in grade school, I filled out my copybook with lines from poems like, “How doth the little busy bee/ Improve each shining hour. . .’’It is well known that the famous English detective, Sherlock Holmes, after capturing some of the most dangerous criminals in Victorian literature, retired to devote the rest of his life to caring for bees.
So I was more than a little nostalgic when, one spring morning, my wife, Julia, said a bumblebee was resting at the bottom of the kitchen window. I looked, and there it was, curled up under the wood sash of the upper window in what seemed to be a hole. Flakes of sawdust were falling down to settle as a pile on the windowsill, and as we listened, we could hear a low, steady crunching sound.
