Mary Winfrey
Mary Hart Willis Winfrey, 88, of Woodville, died June 18, at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
The last child to survive of Sally Hart Gordon and Edgar Oswald Willis, Mrs. Winfrey was born at Lignum and was educated at Lignum School, Westhampton College, and the University of Virginia.
After graduation from Westhampton College in 1923, she began a teaching career in Culpeper that was to last forty years. In 1928 she married Harris Bolling Winfrey, principal of Rappahannock County High School, and the two of them guided and educated many generations of area young people. Mr. Winfrey died in 1969.
She was called aunt by 171 people, members of the Willis and Winfrey families, to whom she was an unofficial genealogist. Her interest in people and her way with words are legendary. She wrote humorous verse to celebrate all occasions, and although blind in later years, continued to work crossword puzzles with the help of her companion, Mrs. Mamie Brown. She was a resident of Autumn Care Nursing Home during the last year.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Tom Von Fange at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Woodville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Culpeper Memorial Hospital, Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church in Sperryville, or Westhampton College.
Pallbearers were A. Gordon Willis, Jr., Edgar Oswald Willis, III, William Thornton Bareford, N. Carrington Taylor, Jr., Robert Willis Holden, and Werter Hurt Willis.
