The School Board learned at its meeting last Tuesday that it would cost about $7,700 to have an outside contractor refurbish the track to bring it into condition to host home track meets.
Only two lanes are open all the way around the track, School Superintendant David Gangel said. The other four lanes have grass growing in them, as well as potholes and uneven spots.
The track became an issue in mid-April when the the track and field team’s two home meets had to be rescheduled to other schools because of the poor condition of the track at RCHS. At that time, School Board Chairman Beverly Massie told the Rappahannock Xe/cs that no money had been allocated for repairs to the track because the School Board was not aware that there were any problems with it.
However, after questions were raised about the cancellation of meets both last year and this season, and with the track in such bad shape that coaches Scott Mellott and Carla Scott were reluctant to allow their teams to even practice on the surface, school officials promised that some action would be taken so the track could be used next year.
