That’s not a bumblebee, that’s a carpenter bee, the scientist explained, and carpenter bees swarm every spring. The female has yellow fur, but the male is mostly black. He said there really wasn’t much you could do about them. They were not actually eating the wood, they were only making a nest for next year’s hatchlings.
The species makes extensive corridors which go along the direction of the grain, with side chambers every' six inches, something like the catacombs of Rome. As he was finishing his phone conversation, the wild-bee expert casually remarked that several years ago a swarm of “carpenters” had taken over an old barn on the government experimental station where he worked.
