In years past, Rappahannock County Catholic residents who faithfully attended Sunday Mass, had to travel every week to Culpeper, Warrenton, Front Royal, Luray or Madison. But, thanks to the generosity of Mr. William Carrigan and the official recognition from the Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington (who named our Mission "St. Peter's"), we have been worshiping the Lord God, praying and socializing together for some years now in Washington itself.
Rev. Maurice du Castillon organized St. Peter's as a mission church of Precious Blood Catholic Church in Culpeper. For many years he resided at the Washington Apartments on Main Street, next to the Rappahannock News office. Two years ago he retired, at the age of eighty-five, and has been succeeded by the present Chaplain for St. Peter's, the Reverend Albert Verbeke. The rectory is still at the same location, and is also office as well as residence for the priest.
Our Faith Community has grown steadily. Through its union in worship, monthly coffee socials, annual picnic, fund-raisers at Sperryville Festivals and Washington "Fourth of July" celebrations, it has fostered many loving, caring relationships.
Each morning, our Chaplain and our daily Communicants pray that peace may abide in our Washington and Rappahannock County community.
This coming Sunday, June 25th, our young people and their parents and friends will join their religion instructors in a special outing, enjoying together a lovely piece of God's creation on Skyline Drive. We ask your prayers for their continued appreciation of Our Lord's love for them.
