RICHMOND — S. Mason Carbaugh, commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, announced that VDACS is taking additional steps this season in its Apple Spray Residue Monitoring Program to determine compliance with the voluntary suspension of the sale of daminozide (Alar). The expanded program will also monitor use of all necessary pesticides.
Specifically, the program includes the following actions:
• VDACS will begin checking pesticide product sales and distribution records at the dealer/distributor level.
• Each orchard will be subject to spray residue analysis including testing for Alar.
• VDACS will also survey growers to determine the types, frequency and amounts of pesticides used.
• Periodic sampling will continue throughout the marketing channels.
“These steps are part of our continuing effort to assure a safe and wholesome food supply,” Carbaugh said. “We want to promote public confidence in agricultural products produced in Virginia and to assist producers in marketing their products.”
