to 60.11 in 1989. This increase is probably due to the improvement in math scores and to the fact that this year’s 11th grade class tested generally higher than last year’s 11th grade class, the superintendent said.
On the other hand. Dr. Gangel pointed out, when one thing is emphasized other things may slip. On this year’s tests, reading was lowest for five of the nine classes, and indeed the average reading percentile slipped from 56.11 to 55.77, a difference that is probably not statistically significant. Dr. Gangel said he would study the scores over the summer and make recommendations later, but "some aspect of reading will probably be singled out for emphasis next year.”
The School Board formally received the Family Life Education curriculum at its Tuesday evening meeting. Several of the members of the committee were in attendance to hear their chairman Judy Tole jokingly tell the Board, “Thank you for the emotional, mental, and physical stress, not to mention the deterioration in my own family life. We scrutinized every word. The members were a vocal, dedicated, determined group.” ' She said that after the School Board approved the curriculum, teachers would be trained and would select the materials that would actually be used in class. The teaching materials would have to be approved by the committee and then the School Board. “Hopefully, we’ll be ready in the fall,” she said. “We all as a community need to focus on values, to encourage parent involvement. I hope you will accept it.”
Mrs. Tole was presented with a plaque with a gavel on it in appreciation for her work.
School Board Chairman Beverly Massie, who served as a member of the committee said, “If anyone had told the members of the committee on the 12th of October that this would take eight months, we might have had a few more people jump ship. If Judy hadn’t showed the leadership ability to tie in this diversified group, we wouldn’t be ready yet.
“We knew at the onset that we weren't going to please everyone," Mrs. Massie continued. “I think we'll have acceptance from most, and there is a provision to opt out. I hope after the parents look at the material, it will not be viewed as a
