This disease caused unsightly skin lesions, diarrhea and mental disturbances. It occured among people who subsisted on low protein diets made up mainly of cereal grains and pork fat. Those who ate highly varied diets that included high protein foods such as meat, milk, eggs and beans were protected against it.
