After months of negotiations and fears that the deal might fall through, it ‘appears that the county and the Town of Washington have reached an agreement to exchange the Town Hall for the county library.
The Town Council approved an agreement in principle after an executive session at its meeting June 14, and the county’s Board of Supervisors tentatively approved much the same language at its meeting Monday evening.
The deal calls for the town to purchase the library building on Gay St. for $150,000, with the money to be deposited on account by June JO. That money, according to an agreement between the county and the library board, will be used toward the construction of a new library building on land donated by Dean Morehouse just outside Washington.
While the new building is under construction, the library board will rent the present building from the town for one dollar a year, plus any costs for maintenance, upkeep and insurance. The rental agreement has an option to extend for one additional year at the prevailing cost of the loan.
In return, the county will pay the town $100,000 for the present Town Hall building on Gay St. adjacent to the Extension Office. The entire sum will be due on or before July 0, 1990. That money will be used by the town to partially pay off the note on the library. The remainder will be
