were lower than any other scores. Dr. Gangel said, he decided to put major emphasis this year on math. In-service training was required for all teachers to encourage them to stress math, with additional in-service required for those teachers who teach math, he said.
The effort paid off with the math average this year at 61.11 percent compared to last year’s 56.66 percent, a gain of 4.45 percent. The math score is not lowest in any grade this year, he said.
The county’s teachers heard the results of the emphasis on math at an assembly held on Friday, June 9 at the high school. After reviewing the increase in scores, I)r. Gangel removed his coat and tie and unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a tshirt which read, “I MADE A DIFFERENCE . . . Rappahannock School Teacher,” with a big red apple on the front. Each teacher was given a shirt as a “thank you” for his effort.
The composite score rose from an average for the nine grades of 57.44 in 19S8
