David N. Crump Jr., the Democratic candidate for the 31st District of Virginia’s House of Delegates, is taking on pollution, announcing Monday the establishment of an air and water pollution hotline. ,
The hotline, a 24-hour, seven day a week number, will serve the 31st District of Clarke, Warren and Rappahannock Counties and portions of Fauquier and Culpeper Counties. According to Crump, the line is available so that citizens can report incidents of air and water pollution as they happen or are experienced.
“It will get recorded, it will get catalogued, and it will get to the right people," said Mr. Crump, who is Front Royal’s town attorney. Crump said he will send the reports to the appropiate enforcement agency and demand an immediate investigation and enforcement of standards.
The new pollution hotline is financed by the Crump campaign and will be manned by Crump staffers, explained Crump. However, because of the continual nature of the service, said Crump, the line will sometimes be served by an answering machine as it was throughout its first day of service.
Crump assured the press at his announcement that the hotline was not, as one reporter suggested, “grandstanding” or purely a campaign ploy, but a community service that will continue after the November election.
What will the hotline accomplish? The pollution reports will provide a focus, explained Crump.
“The fact is there is no program to get the public involved in fighting pollution — until now,” said Crump.
Richard Burton, director of the State Water Control Board, said that, although he was unfamiliar with the new line, “any information is helpful."
Crump targeted Avtex Fibers Front Royal Inc., a deteriorating rayon plant and the Commonwealth’s largest water and air polluter.
