BLACKSBURG - Voter certification of Virginia’s corn growers began June 20 in preparation for a referendum on increasing the checkoff on corn from one-fourth cent to one cent per bushel. 1
The certification period will end on July 31, with the referendum set for Sept. 1.
Any farmer who has sold corn in two of the past three years is eligible to vote, but all voters must first be certified, said Dan Brann, agronomist and grains specialist with Virginia Cooperative Extension at Virginia Tech.
Farmers who grow sweet corn, or those who feed corn on their own farms, are exempt form the checkoff. A check-off is a self-imposed assessment agreed to by a particular commodity group for the purpose of raising money for research and marketing.
