Legitimately included here are questions of an opponent’s judgment, consistency, political loyalties and the like.
All of this is fair game and properly the object of attack. It is, in part, by its nature “negative.” So what?
How can voters choose if they don’t know the past records of the candidates and their approach to issues? And surely no candidate will publicize their views they believe to be unpopular, or disclose past votes or conduct inconsistent with their present position.
The opponent must do that.
