Jennifer Updike, of Newsoms, Virginia, has been awarded a blue ribbon as the state champion in the North Carolina 4-H Food Preservation Project.
Miss Updike’s project saved her family nearly $2,000 in food expenses. She canned more than 915 quarts and 539 pints of fruits and vegetables. And, Miss Updike stuffed her family’s freezer with 915 quarts and 1,522 pounds of meat and nuts. Another 206 quarts of vegetables and trail mix reached her family’s table through a drying technique.
The food preservation project was a major part of Miss Updike’s 4H work for the year, according to Hertford County Home Extension Agent Jane Taylor. “Not only has Jennifer participated in the Food Preservation Project, but she has been very active in the livestock, clothing, crafts (and electric project areas.”
