The haunting images of Edik Gladkov's "Faces of Russia" will make its North American debut at the Middle St. Gallery in Washington this weekend.
For the past several years Mr. Gladkov has smuggled works out of the Soviet Union through the artists' underground for the Middle St. Gallery "Artists and Friends" exhibition. However, this show marks is the first time a large collection of his works has been exhibited in the United States.
Gallery artist Robin Purnell met Mr. Gladkov when she was living in Moscow with her husband, a government employee. Through her acquaintance. he was invited to join the "Artist and Friends" show several years ago, and has contributed each year since.
