There has been excitement this year among the scientists involved in attempts to stop the seemingly invincible advance south of the devastating gypsy moth caterpillars.
News reports, originating at the Connecticut Agriculture Experiment Station in Hamden, told of a fungus which apparently kills gypsy moths. Outbreaks of the fungus in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York have prevented moth damage in thousands of trees.
The spores of the fungus apparently attach to the caterpillars’ skin and produce enzymes which eat through into its body. Once established, the fungus grows and kills the caterpillar.
Whether the gypsy moth outbreak has been stopped in the affected areas or only delayed, entomologists are reluctant to predict the fungus’s effect until a count of egg masses is completed » in the fall.
