At the July meeting of the ARB, which was held Monday, July 24 after being postponed from last Thursday’s regular date, the two remaining members, Robert Parrish and Evelyn Willis, reacted to Mrs. Miller’s resignation.
“I guess I can understand her reason," Mr. Parrish said. He voted with Mrs. Miller in the majority to deny the county’s original application for a certificate of appropriateness. It was the appeal of that denial that led to the council’s approval and then to Mrs. Miller’s resignation.
“She feels that the guidelines were disregarded," Mr. Parrish continued. “She feels strongly that we need guidelines which should be applied across the board."
Mrs. Willis, who voted to approve the application both as a member of the ARB and as a member of the council, called Mrs. Miller’s reaction “inaccurate.” The council wants to have an ARB, she said, but “one of the reasons they voted to approve is that they think the ARB has not been as strict in the past. The ARB has not been a strict governing body.”
