ing ignorance is bliss. Eventually we will learn that there are better places and leave Rappahannock. It has happened before and it will happpen again. The youth will leave and the county will die.
The schools taught us that reading, writing, and arithmatic were unimportant to us. In this school system I learned little and had grades which reflected that. I left and went to where ignorance is not bliss. I learned and have grades which reflect what I have accomplished and I am proud of these grades.
MTV and The Playboy channel are not my idea of preparing youth for the outside world, but many educational and informational programs could certainly help prepare us. Our teachers should be more concerned with the importance of reading, writing, and arithmatic as basic to our educatuon rather than telling us what to watch on television.
Moral issues should be left to our parents while teachers should do just that: teach.
I am not advocating putting up a Pizza Hut and a 10 screen movie theatre, but a little progress would be nice to help prepare us for what lies ahead and eventually bring us back to Rappahannock.
Tourism alone will not keep this county alive. Please give those younger than I the opportunity to learn what is out in the world and<also a little recreation at the same time. A movie on a Saturday night on HBO at home could be a lot safer than a teen driving 45 minutes to and from the movies late at night, when the roads are not particularly safe. Maybe you’ll find the youth more willing to return and keep this county alive by raising their own children here.
As for the poorer youth they may not be able to leave for higher education and see the outside world as it is, but they could at least see it through educational cable T.V. Not even the poorest of us should be denied an education. Cable T.V. offers all of us that.
