RICHMOND—The Virginia State Police called special attention last week to a new state law prohibiting the drinking of alcoholic beverage w hile operating a motor vehicle.
The 1989 General Assembly amended the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 18.2323.1 as follows: “Drinking while operating a motor vehicle; penalty. It shall be unlawful for any person to consume an alcoholic beverage while driving a motor vehicle upon a public highway of this Commonwealth. A violation of this section is punishable as a class 4 misdemeanor.”
Governor Gerald Baliles signed the new section and it becane effective July 1.
