area she was responsible for, she located target circles wherever four two-kilometer quadrants intersected. The target circles are 600 meters in diameter. This resulted in 37 target circles for her portion of the study.
Then using the maps and a compass, Mrs. Dobrovir attempted to locate a suitable place within each target circle for placing a gypsy moth trap. These traps, resembling bright green one-half gallon milk cartons, contain a pheromone (something like a scent which the female moths, which don’t fly, use to attract the male moths, which do) and a strip of insecticide. The male moths are attracted to the traps, fly in, can’t get out, are killed by the insecticide, and drop to the bottom of the traps.
Scrambling over fences, crossing fields and climbing up banks, she was able to locate a suitable location in 36 of the 37 target circles. “I couldn’t get into one site,” she said. In most places she was able to locate the owner and get permission.
Sometimes the trap was placed without permission, but it was clearly labelled giving her name and identifying its purpose. “People were very interested; I had no resistance,” she said. The traps are placed on the north side of trees which have been targets of gypsy moths.
